JMJ CONGREGATION CELEBRATES DECLARATION OF SR. MARY GLOWREY AS “VENERABLE” IN GUNTUR

Venerable Dr. Sr. Mary Glowrey, JMJ – A Milestone in the Journey Toward Sainthood

We are delighted to share the joyful news that Dr. Sr. Mary Glowrey, JMJ—also known in religion as Venerable Mary of the Sacred Heart—has been officially declared Venerable by Pope Leo XIV, a significant step on the path toward sainthood. This declaration was formally proclaimed in Rome on 21 November 2025 after Pope Leo authorized the promulgation of a decree recognizing her life of heroic virtue.

Born on 23 June 1887 in Birregurra, Victoria, Australia, Dr. Mary Glowrey was an accomplished medical doctor before she responded to a higher calling to serve the poor and marginalized in India. At the age of 32, she left a promising medical career in Australia and arrived in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, in 1920, where she entered the Congregation of Jesus Mary Joseph (JMJ) and became one of the first religious sisters to practise medicine—a pioneering achievement in the history of Catholic missionary work.

Her extraordinary ministry in India spanned 37 years, during which she provided compassionate medical care to countless individuals, especially women and children, trained local healthcare workers, and laid the foundation for what would become one of India’s most influential Catholic health organizations. In 1943, she founded the Catholic Hospitals’ Association, now known as the Catholic Health Association of India (CHAI), which continues to serve millions of people across the nation.

The journey toward canonisation began when she was declared a Servant of God on 27 March 2013 by the Bishop of Guntur. The recent declaration of Venerable signifies that the Church has officially acknowledged her life as one of heroic Christian virtue. The next stage in her cause for sainthood will be beatification, which normally requires recognition of a miracle attributed to her intercession.

Celebration by the Congregation of Jesus Mary Joseph (JMJ)

To honour this momentous announcement, the Congregation of Jesus Mary Joseph (JMJ) in Guntur held a special celebration, expressing profound gratitude to God for this milestone in the life of one of its most beloved daughters. Sisters, lay collaborators, and faithful from the local community gathered to commemorate Sr. Mary Glowrey’s legacy of service, compassion, and holiness—especially her unwavering dedication to the poor and sick. The event was marked by prayer, thanksgiving, and reflection on her enduring example of faith in action. The celebration in Guntur began with a Holy Eucharistic celebration, which was concelebrated by Most Rev. Udumala Bala, Archbishop of Visakhapatnam; Most Rev. Chinnabathini Bhagyaiah, Bishop of Guntur; Most Rev. Joseph Rajarao Thelagathoti, Bishop of Vijayawada; and Most Rev. Gali Bali, Bishop Emeritus of Guntur. In their messages, the bishops highlighted Sr. Mary Glowrey’s commitment to healing, human dignity, and faith-inspired service, and called upon the faithful to draw inspiration from her life.

A cultural programme portraying the life and mission of Sr. Mary Glowrey was held in the evening, depicting her journey from Australia to India and her pioneering contribution to healthcare and women’s empowerment. Religious, clergy, healthcare professionals, students, and members of the public attended the programme in large numbers.

Adding to the significance of the occasion, relatives of Sr. Mary Glowrey from Australia were present and participated in the celebrations.

A Legacy of Healing and Compassion

Venerable Mary Glowrey’s life stands as a testament to the transformative power of combining professional skill with deep spiritual conviction. From operating a dispensary in Guntur that later grew into St. Joseph’s Hospital to establishing healthcare institutions and training programs, her legacy continues to inspire healthcare workers and missionaries across India and around the world.

As we celebrate this important milestone, we pray that her life of service and holiness continues to inspire all who work in healthcare and ministry to serve with compassion, integrity, and love.

Venerable Mary of the Sacred Heart Glowrey, pray for us!
